Women of the tribe wear large pottery or wooden discs in their lower lips, which is called a lip-plate. The lip-plate is inserted into the lower lip of a girl when she reaches the age of 15 or 16, and progressively larger plugs are inserted over a period of several months until the lip can take plates of 12 centimeters or more in diameter. Both boys and girls of the Mursi tribe pierce their ears.
